Main options
- MEXT (Japanese Government) Scholarship. Covers tuition and a monthly allowance for study in Japan at undergraduate, graduate and research levels. Applications are made through the Embassy of Japan in Nepal or through a university, and it is highly competitive.
- JASSO scholarships. The Japan Student Services Organization pays a monthly allowance to selected international students, and a smaller one for those at language schools. Selection happens after you arrive and are enrolled, and it is not guaranteed.
- University and school reductions. Many universities and some vocational and language schools reduce tuition for strong results or for students who pass the JLPT at a high level.
- Private foundations. Companies and foundations offer small stipends to students at certain schools.
Tips
- Learn Japanese early. JLPT N2 or N1 opens more scholarships and better part-time jobs.
- Keep good attendance and marks, because most awards check them.
- Remember that a scholarship you may get later cannot replace the funds you must show for the CoE and visa.
Check before you rely on it. Scholarship rules and application windows change every year. Rules, fees and dates are changed by governments often. We last reviewed this page in October 2026. Confirm the current position on the Study in Japan scholarship pages or ask our counsellors, who check it again before your file is submitted.
