Working while you study
- Students on a college student visa may work part time after getting a permission to engage in activity other than that permitted, usually granted when you enter Japan or at an immigration office.
- The limit is 28 hours a week during term and up to eight hours a day during long school holidays. Working more is a serious violation.
- Some jobs, such as in adult entertainment businesses, are never allowed.
- Typical jobs are convenience stores, restaurants and warehouses; higher Japanese level means better pay and conditions.
After graduation
- Graduates of universities and many vocational schools can stay to look for a job on a designated activities visa for up to one year (longer in some cases).
- With a job offer in a suitable field you apply to change to a work visa such as Engineer, Specialist in Humanities or International Services, or other categories.
Long-term residence
Permanent residence generally needs about ten years in Japan, and shorter with a high-skilled professional points score. Stable work, taxes and pension payments, and a clean record matter. Japanese language is a major advantage for all of these.
Check before you rely on it. Work-hour limits and visa categories are set by immigration law and policies change. Rules, fees and dates are changed by governments often.
