Main options
- University merit scholarships. Many US universities give international undergraduates a discount of a few thousand to several tens of thousands of dollars a year, based on marks, test scores and an essay. They are often decided with the admission, so applying early helps.
- Assistantships. Master’s and PhD students can work as teaching or research assistants for a stipend and a tuition waiver. Strong marks, research experience and contact with professors help.
- Fulbright. The US government’s programme for graduate study; Nepal has its own Fulbright office and call for applications.
- Need-based aid. A few wealthy private universities offer need-based aid to international students, but it is very competitive.
Important
- Federal student aid (FAFSA) is not available to most international students.
- A scholarship letter or assistantship offer improves your visa file, but the interview officer still wants to see how all costs are covered.
- Do not pay anyone for “guaranteed” scholarships.
Check before you rely on it. Programme names, deadlines and eligibility change every year. Rules, fees and dates are changed by governments often. We last reviewed this page in October 2026.
