Campus life
US campuses are communities: clubs, sports, research labs, career fairs and student organisations. Nepali student associations at many universities welcome new students, help with airport pickup and run Dashain and Tihar events.
Where to live
- On-campus residence halls: the simplest for the first year, often with a meal plan. Apply for housing as soon as you accept the offer.
- Off-campus apartments: usually shared with other students. Check the lease, the deposit and the bus route to campus.
- Homestay or graduate housing: some universities have special housing for graduate students and families.
Health and money
- Health care in the USA is expensive. Most universities require the student health plan, and you should understand what it covers.
- Open a bank account in the first week. Your passport, I-20 and university letter are the documents you will need.
- You need a Social Security number only if you take a job. Ask your international student office.
Stay in status
Keep your I-20 valid, study full time unless authorised otherwise, never work without permission, and tell the international student office about address changes and travel plans. Breaking these rules can end your status.
Our accommodation page has more ideas for finding a safe place.
Check before you rely on it. Housing, insurance and travel rules differ by university. Rules, fees and dates are changed by governments often. We last reviewed this page in October 2026. Confirm the current position on the Study in the States website or ask our counsellors, who check it again before your file is submitted.
