How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?
The overall band is the average of the four skill bands, rounded to the nearest half band: an average ending in .25 goes up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 goes up to the next whole band. Averages below .25 round down to the whole band.
Rounding examples
| Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | Average | Overall |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6.5 | 6.5 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.25 | 6.5 |
| 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.5 | 6.125 | 6.0 |
| 7.0 | 6.5 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.375 | 6.5 |
| 7.0 | 7.0 | 6.5 | 6.5 | 6.75 | 7.0 |
| 5.5 | 6.0 | 5.5 | 5.5 | 5.625 | 5.5 |
An overall score alone is often not enough. Many universities and visa rules also set a minimum in each skill, which is why the calculator above checks both.

Frequently asked questions
How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?
The overall band is the average of your four skill bands (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking), rounded to the nearest half band. An average that ends in .25 is rounded up to the next half band, and an average that ends in .75 is rounded up to the next whole band. For example, 6.5, 6.5, 6.0 and 6.0 average 6.25, which becomes an overall 6.5.
What does the average 6.125 round to?
An average below .25 is rounded down to the whole band, so 6.125 becomes 6.0, while 6.25 becomes 6.5 and 6.625 becomes 6.5.
What does "no band below 6.0" mean?
Many universities and visa rules ask for an overall score and a minimum in each skill. "6.5 overall with no band below 6.0" means your overall must reach 6.5 and none of Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking can be lower than 6.0. This calculator checks both parts.
Is this the official IELTS score?
No. Your official result is the Test Report Form you receive from the test centre. This calculator only shows how the four bands combine. It is a free tool from WI Education Consultancy Lalitpur, not an official IELTS product.
Does the calculator save or send my scores?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you enter is stored or sent to us.
Can I practise for IELTS with WIEC?
Yes. We run IELTS classes in Pulchowk, Lalitpur (ask our team about batch times and fees), and IELTSWIZZ is our free online practice platform with timed tests and instant feedback.
Which score do I need for my university?
It depends on the university and the course, and some accept other tests such as PTE. Check the course page of your university, or ask our counsellors, who confirm the current requirement before you apply.
Not sure which score you need?
Tell us your course and country and our counsellors will check the current requirement for you.
