Cities and campuses
Most students choose Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide. Canberra, Hobart, Newcastle, Wollongong, Geelong and the Gold Coast are smaller and cheaper. Australia has one of the largest Nepali communities abroad, so festivals, food shops and student societies are easy to find.
Where to live
- University accommodation: easiest for the first semester. Apply early because rooms fill quickly.
- Purpose-built student housing: private blocks near campuses. Fully furnished, but not the cheapest.
- Shared houses and rooms: the most common choice and usually the best value. Always inspect the room or video-call before paying.
- Homestay: useful for younger students or those wanting family support.
Avoid rental scams
- Never send a bond or deposit for a place you have not seen.
- Ask for a written lease and a bond receipt through the state bond authority.
- Be careful with offers that are far below the normal rent.
Our accommodation page has more help on finding a place.
Settling in
- Open a bank account in the first week and get a local SIM.
- Carry your OSHC card and learn how to book a GP.
- Use the public transport concession card if your state offers one to international students.
- Join the student union and the Nepali student society for support and jobs.
Check before you rely on it. Rents and housing rules differ by city and state. Rules, fees and dates are changed by governments often. We last reviewed this page in October 2026.
