Medicine, dentistry and some engineering and veterinary courses cost more. Ask for the fee of your exact course, because universities differ widely.
Living costs
The visa rules use a fixed minimum for yearly living costs (the figure was raised to A$29,710 in late 2025). Real spending depends on the city and how you live:
- Rent: a shared room is commonly A$200–A$350 a week in the big capitals; regional cities are cheaper.
- Food: A$80–A$140 a week if you cook at home.
- Transport, phone, internet, personal: A$40–A$90 a week together.
- OSHC health cover: a few hundred dollars per year for a single student, depending on the insurer and the length of cover.
Funds to show for the visa
You must show that you can pay for the first year of tuition, twelve months of living costs (more with a partner or children) and travel. The money must be genuinely available and its source explained. Use our funds calculator to estimate the total and our exchange-rate page to convert to NPR.
Ways to lower the cost
- Regional campuses often have lower rents and extra post-study work time.
- Many universities give fee reductions for good marks and English scores (see the scholarships page).
- Shared housing and cooking at home save the most money.
Check before you rely on it. Tuition is set by each university, and the visa living-cost figure is updated by the government. Rules, fees and dates are changed by governments often.
