Working while you study
- Eligible full-time students may work off campus up to 24 hours a week during term and full time in scheduled breaks, if the study permit allows it. On-campus work has fewer limits.
- Co-op and internships that are part of the programme need a separate co-op work permit.
After study: PGWP
The Post-Graduation Work Permit can last up to three years, depending on the length of the programme. To be eligible you must have studied at an eligible DLI, finished the programme and meet language requirements. For many college graduates the field of study must also be on the government’s list of programmes linked to labour shortages. The list and the language levels have been changing, so check them before you choose a college programme.
Permanent residence
Common routes are the Canadian Experience Class in Express Entry (after skilled work), and provincial nominee programmes. The government has been reducing the number of new residents and the competition is strong. Good English or French, Canadian work experience and a skilled occupation increase your chances, but nothing is guaranteed.
How to plan
- Choose a programme that leads to work in demand, in a province that wants graduates.
- Improve your language scores. Each point of English or French can matter later.
- Do not choose a college only because it is cheap; check PGWP eligibility.
Check before you rely on it. PGWP rules, language levels, the field of study list and immigration levels are changed often. Rules, fees and dates are changed by governments often.
