Engineering, business and medicine fall at the higher end. Colleges are usually cheaper than universities, but check whether the credential and the work permit rules fit your plans.
Proof of funds for the study permit
- Living costs: the minimum for a single applicant (outside Quebec) was C$22,895 and rises to C$23,448 for applications made from 1 September 2026, with more for each family member. IRCC updates the amount every year.
- Tuition: the first year of tuition, as shown in the LOA.
- Return travel: you also need to show money for travel.
Quebec has its own, higher amount. The funds must be real, available and with a clear source.
Real monthly costs
- Room in a shared home: C$700–C$1,500 a month depending on the city (Toronto and Vancouver are highest).
- Food: C$300–C$500.
- Transport, phone, internet: C$120–C$250.
- Health insurance: provincial health coverage for students in many provinces, and private cover in others for the first months.
Plan with our funds calculator and the exchange-rate page.
Check before you rely on it. The living-cost figure is updated each September, and tuition is set by each institution. Rules, fees and dates are changed by governments often. We last reviewed this page in October 2026. Confirm the current position on the IRCC proof-of-funds page or ask our counsellors, who check it again before your file is submitted.
